CAMPUS SUMMARY
Albany Medical College, one of the nation's oldest private medical schools, prides itself in offering an intimate, collegial environment, which fosters humane values and genuine learning. The institution was founded in 1839 with an initial enrollment of 57 students. Today, the college limits enrollment to a small group of carefully selected students - 128 in each class. As expressed in the Act of Incorporation, the primary mission of Albany Medical College is to "promote medical science and instruction in the departments of learning connected there with." Albany Medical College continues to pursue excellence in the education of health care personnel, research in the basic and clinical medical sciences, and services to the community through the delivery of patient care and the provision of appropriate resources.
Close neighbors of Albany Medical College at its University Heights location include Albany Law School, Albany College of Pharmacy, the Samuel S. Stratton Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and the Capital District Psychiatric Center. The cities of Albany - the capital of New York State - Schenectady, and Troy form the Capital Region with a combined population of over 700,000. Fifteen colleges and universities in the Capital Region and adjoining Saratoga Springs cooperate with each other through the Hudson Mohawk Association of Colleges and Universities. Culturally, the area offers a wide choice of events, places, and attractions. Saratoga, Tanglewood, and the University of Albany, the Empire State Plaza, New York State Museum, Albany Symphony and Lake George Opera provide premier exposure to the arts. Lakes, mountains, and rivers offer outdoor enthusiasts unparalleled opportunities.

UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Albany Medical College was one of the first medical schools to respond to the changing health care needs of our nation. The college restructured its curriculum in 1993 to better address contemporary issues in health care while simultaneously providing a solid clinical and scientific education. The curriculum focuses specifically on the principles and practices of "comprehensive care" - health care that addresses the full spectrum of patient needs, from medical and preventive to palliative and psychosocial. Grades of honors, excellent, good marginal and unsatisfactory are used to evaluate student performance. In the clinical years narrative assessments of performance are also utilized as an important evaluation tool. Graduation requirements include recording a score on the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 and passing a clinical skills exam.
